She is an American actress/singer whose versatility has won her recognition across many kinds of genres, from thrillers to adventures to period films. Johansson was born in New York City, and raised there by her father, an architect, and mother who produced. Hunter was twins with her younger sister. At the age of seven years old, her passion for acting was growing. Her first audition was for commercials. After that, she was enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and later went to the Professional Children's School in Manhattan for further training in her craft. In the Off-Broadway play Sophistry she worked with Ethan Hawke. She then made her first film appearance with North (1994) which was directed by Rob Reiner, at age nine. Johansson was later seen in Just Cause, but she made her debut with Manny & Lo, a film about siblings left behind by their parents who flee.
